Reducing a farm's carbon footprint

Reducing a farm's carbon footprint
When a farm commits to reducing its carbon footprint, there are a number of levers that can be activated to help it achieve its objective.

Below are a few examples of actions you can take.

Fertilizers
In addition to being costly, the use of certain fertilizers generates carbon during their production and in the field. Consequently, the optimization and use of fertilizers (organic or mineral) will help reduce your impact on the environment.

Carbon sequestration
Did you know that soils are natural carbon sinks? In fact, soil stores carbon, particularly in the form of organic matter. Consequently, returning crop residues to the soil and using plant cover in rotation will sequester more carbon.

Energy
This is probably one of the first actions you think of when you want to reduce your carbon footprint. Indeed, generating renewable energy on the farm will not only enable the farmer to be less impacted by fluctuations in energy costs, but also generate additional income while creating a more environmentally-friendly form of energy, be it wind, solar or geothermal (depending on geographical location).

Equipment
Prioritizing low-carbon machines and regularly maintaining existing machines will extend their lifespan and also enable the use of equipment that pollutes less.

Farm management
The use ofprecision farming tools such as MyEasyFarm will enable farmers to optimize their inputs and yields. This lever is linked to one of the previous points concerning fertilizer optimization.
